Visiting a museum is never easy for a child, especially Italian museums where there is often no possibility of interacting with the works of art; no chance to draw and stimulate the creativity in the child. Without the cultural background of an adult, a child can quickly lose interest and stop listening. As a guide and a mother, I understand the importance of creating a game out of a family’s tour of a museum so that children can participate and learn from the stories hiding behind a painting. When I took my daughter and her friends to the Uffizi, it was proof that even children can have fun at the museum.
The Uffizi Gallery—the most-visited museum in Italy in 2021—is the largest collection of Renaissance paintings in the world with nearly 2,000 works of art. From the first corridor, children look around, fascinated by thousands of colors in the incredible frescoes and paintings. We stop to discover the details and to understand the techniques used in a medieval painting; to reveal the anecdotes and secrets behind the works of art. It’s a game of questions and answers involving both children and parents.
Guided by our senses and new-found curiosity, there was no time to get tired. Each room was a new discovery: Botticelli’s Venus and on to paintings by Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo.
When we got to the end, they asked me in choir: ” Another painting! “
