My Story

Letizia Scarpelli - Florentine Guide

I was born and raised in Florence and my family’s roots in the city date back to the late-1500s. Research at the Baptistery Archives revealed the names of my ancestors that were baptized in the Baptistery of Florence from the mid-16th century onward. With the baptism of my child in the same Baptistery as their ancestors, the tradition continues for the 15th generation.
Walking with my daughter along the timeless streets of Florence is always a delightful experience as we relive our family’s past. The stories of my grandparents, great-grandparents and ancestors all come alive. The natural curiosity of my daughter, Caterina, is a source of inspiration for many of my tours. Seeing the piazzas, monuments, statues, streets and hidden treasures of Florence through her eyes is a new way for me to share my passion for the city, not only with children but with adults as well.

Enjoyment of travel and the humanities led me to live abroad, learning the languages and cultures of other countries, which allows me to give tours in English, French, Spanish, and Italian; with some proficiency in German and Greek. Speaking with my daughter in English, since her birth, allowed her to see Florence as a cosmopolitan city, where you can listen to talking in different languages at any corners, from English, to French, Japanese… I love hiking and climbing in the mountains, and I am a passionate supporter of Florence’s local football team, Fiorentina. Every June, the four traditional neighbourhoods of Florence hold a “historical football” match — a 500 year — old tradition and historical re-enactment. Would you like to know which is my neighbourhood? It’s the Reds of Santa Maria Novella; as a child my mother would dress me in red and bring me to watch the matches. This is a tradition I plan to carry on with my own daughter.
